Creating Connection & Community Through Mountain Biking
Creating Connection & Community Through Mountain Biking
To The Spokelore founder Matt Swenson, biking is a joy to be shared by everyone!
Matt was introduced to cycling as a boy in Minneapolis by Ken Woods (pictured right), an early pioneer and advocate of the sport as well as founder of the Gopher Wheelmen.
“I remember being intrigued by it, and Ken immediately welcomed me in,” said Matt. “I was always struck by how that act of inclusion made me feel like part of something bigger.”
Years later as an adult, Matt began racing road bikes when he moved to Denver, Colorado and joined a team. Riding became a near-daily habit. An obsession, even.
Now a committed mountain biker riding 5,000 trail miles per year, Matt’s work in a local retail bike shop has exposed him to cyclists of all ability levels and styles. To help customers choose the right bike, he asks lots of questions. He gets them talking about why they bike - or why they want to bike.
Hearing all these stories, Matt realized that everyone has a “biking origin story,” or how they came to the sport. Bringing these stories to life in The Spokelore might be just the community you need - for inspiration to start pedaling, and keep pedaling.
At The Spokelore, everyone is welcome!
“You go where you look.” To me, this is more than good advice for staying upright on your bike - it’s also a metaphor for life.
We’re committed to creating an inviting, inclusive environment for anyone who wants to grow their skills and enjoy time on the trail. It’s about connection, not competition.
As a BICP-certified Level 2 coach, I’ll help you learn the fundamentals and next level skills, so you can grow your confidence and enjoy mountain biking as an accessible, lifelong activity.
BICP’s Ten Fundamentals, paired with my riding experience and clinics I have attended, are the springboard for my coaching. BICP's Ten Fundamentals include bike and body positions as well as the supporting elements that are critical for maintaining balance, stability, and control on the trail.
